Notes from the 2009 Chairperson Corner

As summertime quickly draws near, here are some Fun Facts to ponder about the season;

·             - Each person in the US eats about 15 pounds of watermelon per year (that’s a lot of seed spitting!)

·             - The Dog Days of summer, widely regarded to be the 1^st week of July, through the 1^st week of August, is named for the Dog Star Sirius. The star is at its brightest during this period, so the ancient Greeks thought it was responsible for droughts and sickness.

·             - And finally, the number 808,897 may be the most important number ever, especially to those of us here in the Sunshine State, for it is the number granted to Willis Haviland Carrier in 1906 by the US Patent Office for his “Apparatus for Treating Air”, or as we call it today, the Air Conditioner!

Here’s wishing all a happy and safe summer, and don’t forget, we still have two more meetings (May and June) before we break in July, and resume again in August. Don’t forget Bingo either, Thursday evenings; early birds start at 6. What a COOL way to spend a summer night!
